BOX 30036 LANSING, MICHIGAN 48909-7536 PHONE: (517) 373-7670 FAX: (517) 373-5958 COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES September 11, 2024 A meeting of the Senate Committee on Veterans and Emergency Services was scheduled for Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at 9:15 a.m., in the 1300 Room of the Binsfeld Office Building. The agenda summary is as follows: 1. Reported SB 834 (Sen. Hertel) with recommendation. The Chair called the meeting to order at 9:16 a.m. She instructed the Clerk to call the roll. At that time, the following members were present: Chair Klinefelt, Sen.(s) Hertel, Santana and Outman, a quorum was present. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Hertel to adopt the meeting minutes from June 12, 2024. Without objection, the minutes were adopted. The Chair requested the committee participate in a moment of silence to honor of those lost in the 9/11 tragedy. The Chair brought up SB 834 and invited Sen. Hertel to summarize the bill. The Chair invited the following individuals to present testimony regarding SB 834: Monty Nye, Michigan Professional Firefighters Union - Support The cards were read of those individuals not wishing to present testimony regarding SB 834: Matt Sowash, Police Officers Association of Michigan – Support Mike Sauger, President Fraternal Order of Police – Support Tim Bourgeois, Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards – Support Stephanie Johnson, Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police – Support Matt Saxton, Michigan Sheriffs’ Association – Support Nate Johnson, Michigan State Trooper Command Officers Association – Support Nate Johnson, Michigan Association of Police Organizations – Support Nate Johnson, Michigan State Police Trooper Association – Support Travis Fletcher, Michigan State Police – Support Tom Gehart, Detroit Firefighters Association - Support The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Santana to report SB 834 to the floor with recommendation that the bill pass. The vote was as follows: Yeas: Chair Klinefelt, Sen.(s) Hertel, Santana and Outman Nays: None The motion prevailed and the bill was reported. There being no further business before the committee, the Chair moved to adjourn the committee. Without objection, the committee was adjourned at 9:25 a.m. Date adopted by committee: 09/18/2024
