Context text: Not Voting—0 In The Chair: Moss The Senate agreed to the title of the bill. Senator Klinefelt asked and was granted unanimous consent to make a statement and moved that the statement be printed in the Journal. The motion prevailed. Senator Klinefelt’s statement is as follows: When I was engaged and getting ready to get married, my husband was stationed down in Louisiana, we were in Philadelphia, and we’re getting married at a military base in New Jersey. I met with the priest in New Jersey and my husband met with the priest down in Louisiana. The trained priest determined that I had no business getting married. We had to rush to find another priest to marry us. This year marks 40 years of marriage. I think the priest who was trained may not have gotten it right, No. 1. No. 2, when a couple gets to choose the person who is doing the ceremony that’s one of the most important things in their lives, they’re likely to choose somebody who knows a lot more than an absolute stranger as to whether or not those two should be getting married. That’s all I have. The following bill was read a third time: Senate Bill No. 287, entitled A bill to amend 1846 RS 83, entitled “Of marriage and the solemnization thereof,” by amending section 16 (MCL 551.16), as amended by 2006 PA 419.
