Context text: We’re also standing up for democracy and fighting for a transparent system that works for everyone. Friends, I want you to know that no matter what D.C. Republicans try to do to our democratic process or our constitutional rights, here in Michigan, we have your back. We’re making sure that you have a voice in utility rate cases, and fair transparency pricing when it comes to your car insurance. We’re protecting your right to a fair and free election by funding election equipment upgrades for our local clerks. And we’re protecting your fundamental right to health care. I am proud that this budget protects Medicaid from federal cuts and works to lower the cost of prescription drugs because no one should have to stare down a financial crisis simply for seeking the medical care they need. Finally, we’re doing everything we can to fight the rising cost of inflation brought on by federal policies. This budget seeks to keep everyday costs down by investing in programs like eviction protection, home repairs and weatherization grants to lower utility bills, and provide food assistance for those who need it most. Lastly, I wanted to thank the members of the Senate Appropriations Committee. This is our fourth budget, building a budget for the people. You have brought your expertise, your passion, and your compassion for Michigan families, and I thank you for your hard work in this fourth year. We also want to take time to acknowledge your staffs and our amazing, hardworking staff at the Senate Fiscal Agency. You lending your expertise and the countless hours you have put forward to ensure that these recommendations have built a long-term, sustainable, and structurally sound budget does not go unnoticed. We thank you for your hard work. This budget shows that even in uncertain times, the Michigan Senate is choosing stability, fairness, and above all, the people of Michigan—and we will do so every single time.
