Representative Rogers moved to adopt the meeting minutes from June 15, 2021. There being no objection, the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. The Chair invited Tom Lambert, representing Michigan Open Carry, to give a presentation on parity and legal transportation of firearms, along with penalty reductions for the improper carry of a pistol. Questions and discussion followed. The Chair laid HB 4197 and HB 4539 before the committee: HB 4197 (Rep. Hornberger) A bill to prohibit local units of government from enacting or enforcing any law, ordinance, policy, or rule that limits local officials, officers, or employees from communicating or cooperating with appropriate federal officials concerning the immigration status of individuals; to prescribe the powers and duties of certain state and local officers, officials, and employees; and to prescribe penalties and remedies. HB 4539 (Rep. LaFave) A bill to prohibit counties from enacting or enforcing any law, ordinance, policy, or rule that limits peace officers or local officials, officers, or employees from communicating or cooperating with appropriate federal officials concerning the immigration status of individuals; to prescribe the powers and duties of certain state and local officials, officers, and employees; and to prescribe penalties and remedies. An amendment to HB 4197 was adopted at the June 15th, 2021 meeting. The following person submitted a card in opposition to HB 4197 and HB 4539, but did not wish to speak: Emily Snider, representing the Michigan Anti-Defamation League.
