- HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION REP. MATT KOLESZAR CHAIR COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, June 18, 2024 9:00 AM Room 521, House Office Building The House Committee on Education was called to order by Chair Koleszar. The Chair requested attendance be called: Present: Reps. Koleszar, Churches, Shannon, Weiss, Glanville, Conlin, Edwards, Wegela, Xiong, Markkanen, Paquette, Johnsen. Absent: Reps. Greene, Wendzel. Excused: Reps. Greene, Wendzel. Representative Paquette joined the committee remotely. Representative Shannon moved to adopt the meeting minutes from June 11, 2024. There being no objection, the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. The Chair laid HB 4027 before the committee: HB 4027 (Rep. Zorn) A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled "The revised school code," (MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1138a. Representative Zorn and Shane Preston, representing the Department of Defense State Liaison Office ,testified in support of HB 4027. Questions and discussion followed. The following person submitted a card in support of HB 4027, but did not wish to speak: Dr. Sheryl Kennedy, representing the Michigan Department of Education. The Chair laid HB 5329 before the committee: HB 5329 (Rep. Hope) A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled "The revised school code," (MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1179c. Angie Goulet, representing the office of Representative Hope, Brianna Romines, representing the Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan, and Beth Hulett, a Michigan Parent Teacher Association Board Member and parent advocate, testified in support of HB 5329. Questions and discussion followed. Jenn Brown, a school counselor and parent advocate, and Aubrey Brown, a school teacher and an individual with Epilepsy, testified in support of HB 5329. Dr. Sarah Dixon, representing the Michigan Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, testified in support of HB 5329. Questions and discussion followed. Wyatt Sterling, the sibling of an individual with Epilepsy, testified in support of HB 5329. The following people submitted a card in support of HB 5329, but did not wish to speak: Dr. Sheryl Kennedy, representing the Michigan Department of Education. Jenn Garland, representing the Michigan Parent Teacher Association. Representative Markkanen moved to excuse Representatives Greene and Wendzel from the meeting. There being no objection the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. There being no further business before the committee, Chair Koleszar adjourned the meeting at 9:54 AM.
