- HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION REP. MATT KOLESZAR CHAIR COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, November 12, 2024 9:00 AM Room 521, House Office Building The House Committee on Education was called to order by Chair Koleszar. The Chair requested attendance be called: Present: Reps. Koleszar, Churches, Shannon, Weiss, Glanville, Conlin, Edwards, Wegela, Xiong, Greene, Markkanen, Wendzel, Johnsen. Absent: Rep. Paquette. Excused: None. Representative Glanville moved to adopt the meeting minutes from September 25, 2024. There being no objection, the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. The Chair laid HB 4027 before the committee: HB 4027 (Rep. Zorn) A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled "The revised school code," (MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1138a. Representative Conlin moved to adopt substitute (H-2) to HB 4027. The motion prevailed 13- 0-0: FAVORABLE ROLL CALL Yeas: Reps. Koleszar, Churches, Shannon, Weiss, Glanville, Conlin, Edwards, Wegela, Xiong, Greene, Markkanen, Wendzel, Johnsen. Nays: None. Pass: None. Representative Greene moved to report out HB 4027 with recommendation, as substitute (H- 2). The motion prevailed 13-0-0: FAVORABLE ROLL CALL Yeas: Reps. Koleszar, Churches, Shannon, Weiss, Glanville, Conlin, Edwards, Wegela, Xiong, Greene, Markkanen, Wendzel, Johnsen. Nays: None. Pass: None. The following people submitted a card in support of HB 4027, but did not wish to speak: Dr. Sheryl Kennedy, representing the Michigan Department of Education. Shane Preston, representing the United States Department of Defense. The Chair laid HB 5735 before the committee: HB 5735 (Rep. Glanville) A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled "The revised school code," by amending sections 1278a and 1278b (MCL 380.1278a and 380.1278b), as amended by 2022 PA 105. Representative Glanville testified in support of HB 5735. Questions and discussion followed. Dr, Sheryl Kennedy, representing the Michigan Department of Education, testified in support of HB 5735.
