- HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON FAMILIES, CHILDREN, AND SENIORS REP. RODNEY WAKEMAN CHAIR COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, May 18, 2021 12:00 p.m. Room 519, House Office Building The House Committee on Families, Children, and Seniors was called to order by the Chair. The Chair requested attendance be called. The Clerk called the attendance and announced a quorum was present. Present: Reps. Wakeman, Wozniak, Marino, Rendon, Tisdel, Pohutsky, Camilleri, Brenda Carter. Absent: Rep. Aiyash. Excused: Rep. Aiyash. Representative Wozniak moved to adopt the meeting minutes from May 11, 2021. There being no objections, the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. The Chair laid HB 4640 before the committee: HB 4640 (Rep. Glenn) A bill to amend 1982 PA 250, entitled "Child abuse and neglect prevention act," by amending section 2 (MCL 722.602), as amended by 2018 PA 60. The following individuals submitted a card in opposition to HB 4640, but did not wish to speak: Shari Crozier; Ronald Rappley; and John Tuinstra, representing the Citizens for Parental Rights. Representative Tisdel moved to report out HB 4640 with recommendation. The motion prevailed 7-1-0: FAVORABLE ROLL CALL Yeas: Reps. Wakeman, Wozniak, Marino, Rendon, Tisdel, Pohutsky, Camilleri. Nays: Rep. Brenda Carter. Pass: None. The Chair laid HB 4644 before the committee: HB 4644 (Rep. Wakeman) A bill to amend 1967 PA 281, entitled "Income tax act of 1967," by amending section 8 (MCL 206.8), as amended by 2018 PA 38. Representative Marino moved to report out HB 4644 with recommendation, as substitute (H- 1). The motion prevailed 5-3-0: FAVORABLE ROLL CALL Yeas: Reps. Wakeman, Wozniak, Marino, Rendon, Tisdel. Nays: Reps. Pohutsky, Camilleri, Brenda Carter. Pass: None. The Chair laid before the committee a presentation on Alzheimer's disease. Colin Ford, Public Policy Director for the Michigan Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, and Doug Hammond, a resident of Birch Run, explained the challenges of living with dementia or living with someone who has dementia. Questions followed. A written copy of their comments is attached. The Chair laid before the committee a presentation on the state's elder law. Christine Caswell, Catherine Jacobs, and Kelly Quardokus, elder law attorneys representing the Elder Law and Disability Rights Section of the State Bar of Michigan, briefed the committee on various issues pertaining to Michigan's laws related to senior citizens. Representative Pohutsky moved to excuse Representative Aiyash from the meeting. There being no objections, the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. There being no further business before the committee; Representative Rendon moved that the committee adjourn.
