- HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION REP. PAMELA HORNBERGER CHAIR COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, September 21, 2021 9:00 AM Room 521, House Office Building The House Committee on Education was called to order by Chair Hornberger. The Chair requested attendance be called: Present: Reps. Hornberger, Paquette, Green, Markkanen, O'Malley, Beeler, Damoose, Posthumus, Camilleri, Brenda Carter, Koleszar, Shannon, Stone. Absent: None. Excused: None. Representative Shannon joined the committee remotely. Representative O'Malley moved to adopt the meeting minutes from June 8, 2021. There being no objection, the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. The Chair laid HB 5097 before the committee: HB 5097 (Rep. Beeler) A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled "The revised school code," by amending section 1278 (MCL 380.1278), as amended by 2016 PA 170. Representative Beeler, Tim Keller, and Jeremiah May, testified in support of HB 5097. Questions and discussion followed. Cindy Gambola and Molly Sweeney, testified in opposition to HB 5097. Questions and discussion followed. The following people submitted a card in opposition to HB 5097, but did not wish to speak: Merissa Kovach, representing the American Civil Liberties Union. Bob Kefgen, representing the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals. Emily Snider, representing the Anti-Defamation League. Jennifer Smith, representing the Michigan Association of School Boards. Dr. David Michelson, representing the Michigan Education Association. Sheryl Kennedy, representing the Michigan Department of Education. Jerome Reide, representing the Michigan Department of Civil Rights. There being no further business before the committee, Rep.
