HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON MILITARY, VETERANS AND HOMELAND SECURITY REP. BEAU MATTHEW LAFAVE CHAIR COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, October 5, 2021 12:00 PM Room 307, House Office Building The House Committee on Military, Veterans and Homeland Security was called to order by Chair LaFave. At 12:04 PM, the Chair laid the committee at ease. At 12:05 PM, the Chair called the committee back to order. The Clerk read a letter from House Speaker Jason Wentworth which removed Representative Jones and added Representative Anthony as members of the House Committee on Military, Veterans, and Homeland Security. The letter also appointed Representative Rogers as Minority Vice Chair of the House Committee on Military, Veterans, and Homeland Security. The Chair requested attendance be called: Present: Reps. LaFave, Beeler, Eisen, Bezotte, Martin, Rogers, Anthony, Coleman, Steenland. Absent: None. Excused: None. Representative Eisen moved to adopt the meeting minutes from June 22, 2021. There being no objection, the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. The Chair laid HR 160 before the committee: HR 160 (Rep. Manoogian) A resolution to welcome Afghan refugees to the state of Michigan. Representative Manoogian introduced the resolution. Questions and discussion followed. Tripp Adams, representing the Truman National Security Project, testified in support of HR 160. Father Danaher, representing the Rector of Christ Church Cranbrook, testified in support of HR 160. Questions and discussion followed. The following person submitted a card in support of HR 160, but did not wish to speak: Paul Stankewitz, representing the Michigan Catholic Conference. The Chair laid HB 4969 before the committee: HB 4969 (Rep. LaFave) A bill to amend 1986 PA 109, entitled "An act to prescribe certain powers and duties of conservation officers; and to vest in conservation officers certain powers, privileges, prerogatives, and immunities of peace officers," (MCL 300.21 to 300.22) by adding section 1a. At 12:26 PM, the Chair laid the committee at ease. At 12:27 PM, the Majority Vice Chair Beeler called the committee back to order. Chair LaFave introduced the bill. Questions and discussion followed. At 12:40 PM, the Majority Vice Chair Beeler laid the committee at ease. At 12:41 PM, the Chair called the committee back to order. The following people submitted a card in opposition to HB 4969, but did not wish to speak: Matt Saxton, representing the Michigan Sheriff's Association. Craig Brunet, representing the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. There being no further business before the committee, Rep. Beau LaFave adjourned the meeting at 12:42 PM.
