- HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON FAMILIES AND VETERANS REP. KATHY SCHMALTZ CHAIR COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, June 3, 2025 Noon. Room 307, House Office Building The House Committee on Families and Veterans was called to order by Chair Schmaltz. The Chair requested attendance to be called: Present: Reps. Schmaltz, Fox, Johnsen, Thompson, Pavlov, Woolford, Young, Byrnes, Rheingans and Xiong. Absent: Rep. Wozniak. Excused: Rep. Wozniak. Representative Young moved to adopt the meeting minutes from May 20, 2025. There being no objection, the motion prevailed with unanimous consent. Chair Schmaltz invited Bob Powell, CEO of Family Service and Children’s Aid, to give a presentation on strengthening of the emotional health and functioning of children, adults, and families through counseling, education, adoption, foster care, advocacy, adult guardian services, and program development. Questions and discussion followed. The Chair laid HB 4362 before the committee: HB 4362 (Rep. Johnsen) A bill to amend 2012 PA 176, entitled "Mozelle senior or vulnerable adult medical alert act," by amending the title and section 5 (MCL 28.715). Representative Johnsen testified in support of HB 4362. Kristyn Merkle, representing the Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan, testified in support of HB 4362. Questions and discussions followed. Denneen Smith, representing the Friendship Centers of Emmet County, testified in support of HB 4362. The following people submitted a card in support of HB 4362, but did not wish to speak: Mary Pollock, representing the Michigan State Employee Retirees Association. Sandra Carolan. Sharon Pulis. Danielle Sirianni, representing the Michigan County Social Services Association. Representative Pavlov moved to excuse Representative Wozniak from the meeting. There being no objection the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. There being no further business before the committee, Chair Schmaltz adjourned the meeting at 12:57 PM.
