HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON AGRICULTURE REP. JULIE ALEXANDER CHAIR COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Wednesday, January 26, 2022 10:00 AM Room 326, House Office Building The House Committee on Agriculture was called to order by Chair Alexander. The Chair requested attendance be called: Present: Reps. Alexander, Posthumus, Bellino, Rendon, Filler, Carra, Garza, Cambensy, Witwer, Puri. Absent: Rep. Hope. Excused: Rep. Hope. Representative Filler moved to adopt the meeting minutes from June 23, 2021. There being no objection, the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. Representative Rendon moved to adopt the meeting minutes from November 30, 2021. There being no objection, the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. The Chair laid HB 4982 before the committee: HB 4982 (Rep. LaFave) A bill to amend 2000 PA 92, entitled "Food law," by amending section 7129 (MCL 289.7129). Representative LaFave testified in support of HB 4982. Questions and discussion followed. Zak Weston, representing the Good Food Institute, testified in opposition to HB 4982. Questions and discussion followed. The following people submitted a card in support of HB 4982, but did not wish to speak: Kristie Walls, representing herself. The following people submitted a card with no position on HB 4982, but did not wish to speak: Ashley Steffen, representing the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. The Chair laid the presentation on Cottage Food Law before the committee. Food Safety Educator Wade Syers, representing MSU Extension, provided a presentation on MSU Extension's Food Safety Courses in Relation to the Cottage Food Industry. Questions and discussion followed. Brooke Wykes, representing Oh Sweet Confections, provided testimony on Updating the Cottage Food Law. Questions and discussion followed. Amanda Shreve, representing the Michigan Farmers Market Association, provided a presentation on the Cottage Food Law and Michigan Farmers Markets. Questions and discussion followed. Liz Kruger, representing Honey Bun Bakery, provided testimony on Updating the Cottage Food Law. Questions and discussion followed. Christine Lebold, representing Michigan Cookier's, provided testimony on Updating the Cottage Food Law. Questions and discussion followed. Trish Adams, representing Twisted Sugar Boutique, provided testimony on Updating the Cottage Food Law. Ellen Hamlett, representing the Institute for Justice, provided testimony on Updating the Cottage Food Law. Representative Witwer moved to excuse Representative Hope from the meeting. There being no objection the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. There being no further business before the committee, Chair Alexander adjourned the meeting at 11:44 AM.
