- HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON MILITARY, VETERANS AND HOMELAND SECURITY REP. BEAU MATTHEW LAFAVE CHAIR COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, February 8, 2022 12:00 PM Room 307, House Office Building The House Committee on Military, Veterans and Homeland Security was called to order by Chair LaFave. The Chair requested attendance be called: Present: Reps. LaFave, Beeler, Bezotte, Martin, Rogers, Anthony, Coleman, Steenland. Absent: Rep. Eisen. Excused: Rep. Eisen. Representative Bezotte moved to adopt the meeting minutes from October 26, 2021. There being no objection, the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. The Chair laid HB 4908 before the committee: HB 4908 (Rep. LaFave) A bill to amend 1972 PA 382, entitled "Traxler- McCauley-Law-Bowman bingo act," by amending section 7a (MCL 432.107a), as amended by 1999 PA 108, and by adding section 7e. At 12:03 PM, the Chair laid the committee at ease. At 12:04 PM, Majority Vice Chair Beeler called the committee back to order. Chair LaFave explained the bill. At 12:09 PM, Majority Vice Chair Beeler laid the committee at ease. At 12:10 PM, the Chair called the committee back to order. Tim Paxson, representing the American Legion-Department of Michigan, testified in opposition to HB 4908. Questions and discussion followed. The following person submitted a card in opposition to HB 4908, but did not wish to speak: Mark Sutton, representing the Marine Corps League-Department of Michigan. Jeff Connell, representing the National Guard Association of Michigan, testified in support of HB 4908. Questions and discussion followed. At 12:33 PM, the Chair laid the committee at ease. At 12:34 PM, the Chair called the committee back to order. Jeff Frisby, representing the National Guard Association of Michigan, testified in support of HB 4908. Questions and discussion followed. Derek Blumke, representing the Veterans of Foreign Wars-Department of Michigan, testified in opposition to HB 4908. Questions and discussion followed. The following people submitted a card in support of HB 4908, but did not wish to speak: Chris Hackbarth, representing the Michigan Municipal League. Judy Allen, representing the Michigan Townships Association. Deena Bosworth, representing the Michigan Association of Counties. The following people submitted a card in opposition to HB 4908, but did not wish to speak: Jeff Morris, representing Greektown Casino. Louie Thoros, representing MGM Grand Detroit. Cheryl Scott Dube, representing Motor City Casino. The Chair laid HB 5384 before the committee: HB 5384 (Rep. Steven Johnson) A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled "The revised school code," by amending section 1278a (MCL 380.1278a), as amended by 2020 PA 158. Representative Johnson introduced the bill. Questions and discussion followed. Representative Rogers moved to excuse Representative Eisen from the meeting. There being no objection the motion prevailed by unanimous consent.
