- HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON FAMILIES, CHILDREN, AND SENIORS REP. RODNEY WAKEMAN CHAIR COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, March 15, 2022 12:00 p.m. Room 519, House Office Building The House Committee on Families, Children, and Seniors was called to order by the Chair. The Chair requested attendance be called. The Clerk called the attendance and announced a quorum was present. Present: Reps. Wakeman, Meerman, Rendon, Roth, Tisdel, Pohutsky, Camilleri, Brenda Carter, Aiyash. Absent: None. Excused: None. Representative Rendon moved to adopt the meeting minutes from March 8, 2022. There being no objections, the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. The Chair laid HB 5777 before the committee: HB 5777 (Rep. Frederick) A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled "The revised school code," (MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1705. Mallorie Evans, an Educational Audiologist at Los Angeles Unified School District, testified via zoom in support of HB 5777. Jerome Reide, Legislative Liaison for the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, and Annie Urasky, Director of the Division on Deaf, Deaf/blind and Hard Hearing in the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, testified and submitted written testimony in support of HB 5777. Shon Halacka, representing the Cued Speech Association, testified and submitted written testimony in opposition to HB 5777. Daniel Seraphinoff, President of the Michigan Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Chapter, testified in opposition to HB 5777. Sidney Kraizman, Advocacy Chair of the Michigan Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Chapter, testified and submitted testimony in opposition to HB 5777. Lori Earls, representing LEAD-K, testified in support of HB 5777. Martin Dale-Hench testified in support of HB 5777. Peter Dale testified and submitted written testimony in support of HB 5777. Natalie Grupido, a deaf Educational Specialist, representing Deaf Educators, testified and submitted written testimony in support of HB 5777. Cindy Blackman , representing FAD, testified in support of HB 5777. Sean Forbes testified in support of HB 5777. Ashley Garber, representing the Michigan Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, testified in opposition to HB 5777. Walter LaPlante testified in support of HB 5777.
