- HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION REP. PAMELA HORNBERGER CHAIR COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, May 10, 2022 9:00 AM Room 521, House Office Building The House Committee on Education was called to order by Chair Hornberger. The Chair requested attendance be called: Present: Reps. Hornberger, Paquette, Markkanen, O'Malley, Beeler, Damoose, Brenda Carter, Koleszar, Shannon, Stone. Absent: Reps. Green, Posthumus, Camilleri. Excused: Reps. Green, Posthumus, Camilleri. Representative Paquette moved to adopt the meeting minutes from March 22, 2022. There being no objection, the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. The Chair laid HB 6039 and HB 6040 before the committee: HB 6039 (Rep. Wendzel) A bill to amend 2000 PA 258, entitled "Career and technical preparation act," by amending section 5 (MCL 388.1905). HB 6040 (Rep. Morse) A bill to amend 1996 PA 160, entitled "Postsecondary enrollment options act," by amending section 5 (MCL 388.515). Representatives Wendzel and Morse testified in support of HB 6039 and HB 6040. The following person submitted a card with a neutral position on HB 6039 and HB 6040, but did not wish to speak: Bill Zaagman, representing the Michigan High School Athletic Association. The following people submitted a card in support of HB 6039 and HB 6040, but did not wish to speak: Dr. Sheryl Kennedy, representing the Michigan Department of Education. Dr. Trevor Kubatzke, representing Lake Michigan College. Dan Jenuwine, representing Oakland Community College. Cortni Hauck, representing North Central Michigan Community College. Brandy Johnson, representing the Michigan Community College Association. Rusty Merchant, representing Grand Rapids Community College. Dr. Don MacMaster, representing Alpena Community College. The following person submitted a card in support of HB 6040, but did not wish to speak: Jim Sawyer, representing Macomb Community College. The Chair laid HB 6013 before the committee: HB 6013 (Rep. Hornberger) A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled "The revised school code," (MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1531e. Representative Paquette took over the gavel, the time being 9:06 AM. Chair Hornberger testified in support of HB 6013. Chair Hornberger returned to the gavel, the time being 9:08 AM. The following people submitted a card in support of HB 6013, but did not wish to speak: Chris Glass, representing the Education Advocates of West Michigan. Mike Latvis, representing the Wayne Regional Educational Service Agency. David Randels, representing Oakland Schools. Dr. Sheryl Kennedy, representing the Michigan Department of Education. Representative Paquette moved to excuse Representatives Green, Posthumus and Camilleri from the meeting. There being no objection the motion prevailed by unanimous consent.
