- HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION REP. PAMELA HORNBERGER CHAIR COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, June 7, 2022 9:00 AM Room 521, House Office Building The House Committee on Education was called to order by Chair Hornberger. The Chair requested attendance be called: Present: Reps. Hornberger, Markkanen, O'Malley, Beeler, Damoose, Posthumus, Camilleri, Brenda Carter, Koleszar, Shannon, Stone. Absent: Reps. Paquette, Green. Excused: Reps. Paquette, Green. Representative Shannon joined the committee remotely. Representative Markkanen moved to adopt the meeting minutes from May 17, 2022. There being no objection, the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. The Chair laid SB 600, SB 601, SB 602 and SB 603 before the committee: SB 600 (Sen. Theis) A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled "The revised school code," by amending section 1177 (MCL 380.1177), as amended by 2013 PA 121, and by adding sections 1177b and 1177c. SB 601 (Sen. Theis) A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled "The revised school code," (MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding sections 1136a and 1136b. SB 602 (Sen. Barrett) A bill to amend 1978 PA 368, entitled "Public health code," (MCL 333.1101 to 333.25211) by adding section 5111a. SB 603 (Sen. LaSata) A bill to amend 1978 PA 368, entitled "Public health code," by amending sections 2253 and 2453 (MCL 333.2253 and 333.2453), section 2253 as amended by 2006 PA 157. Senator Theis and Senator LaSata testified in support of SB 600, SB 601, SB 602 and SB 603. Questions and discussion followed. The following people submitted a card in opposition to SB 600, SB 601, SB 602 and SB 603, but did not wish to speak: Rachel Richards, representing the Michigan League for Public Policy. Jenell Mansfield, representing the American Federation of Teachers. Sierra Cameron, representing the Michigan Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Matt Schueller, representing the Michigan Association of Superintendents and Administrators. Dr. Sheryl Kennedy, representing the Michigan Department of Education. De'Shondria Bedenfield, representing the Michigan Association of School Boards. Norm Hess, representing the Michigan Association of Local Public Health. Bob Kefgen, representing the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals. Representative Posthumus moved to excuse Representatives Paquette and Green from the meeting. There being no objection the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. There being no further business before the committee, Chair Hornberger adjourned the meeting at 9:12 AM.
