- HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON AGRICULTURE REP. JULIE ALEXANDER CHAIR COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Wednesday, September 4, 2019 10:31 AM Room 326, House Office Building The House Standing Committee on Agriculture was called to order by the Chair Alexander. The Chair requested attendance be called: Present: Reps. Alexander, Meerman, LaFave, Eisen, Mueller, Wendzel, Elder, Coleman, Garza, Cynthia Johnson, Witwer. Absent/Excused: None. The Chair laid HR 0143 before the committee: HR 0143 (Rep. O'Malley)A resolution to support the U.S. cherry industry's petition before the U.S. International Trade Commission stating unfair trade practices against Turkey and to urge the Commission and the U.S. Department of Commerce to take action protecting U.S. cherry farmers. Representative LaFave moved to adopt the meeting minutes from August 13, 2019. There being no objection, the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. At 10:32 AM, the Chair laid the committee at ease. At 10:49 AM, the Chair called the committee back to order. Representative O'Malley, joined by Mark Miezio, representing Cherry Bay Orchards, Michael DeRuiter, representing DeRuiter Farms, and Nels Veliquette, representing Cherry Ke Incorporated, all testified in support of the resolution. Questions and discussion followed. The following people submitted a card in support of HR 0143, but did not wish to speak: Phil Korson, representing the the Cherry Marketing Institute Incorporated. Denise Pallarito, representing the the Michigan Timberman Association. Representative Meerman moved to report out HR 0143 with recommendation. FAVORABLE ROLL CALL Yeas: Reps. Alexander, Meerman, LaFave, Eisen, Mueller, Wendzel, Elder, Coleman, Garza, Cynthia Johnson, Witwer. Nays: None. Pass: None. The motion prevailed 11-0-0. There being no further business before the committee, Rep. Julie Alexander adjourned the meeting at 11:29 AM.
