- HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION REP. PAMELA HORNBERGER CHAIR COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, September 10, 2019 9:00 AM Room 521, House Office Building The House Standing Committee on Education was called to order by Chair Hornberger. The Chair requested attendance be called: Present: Reps. Hornberger, Paquette, Crawford, Vaupel, Reilly, Hall, Markkanen, O'Malley, Wakeman, Camilleri, Sowerby, Brenda Carter, Tyrone Carter, Koleszar, Stone. Absent/Excused: None. Representative Vaupel moved to adopt the meeting minutes from June 11, 2019. There being no objection, the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. The Chair laid HB 4184 before the committee: HB 4184 (Rep. Farrington) A bill to amend 1966 PA 331, entitled "Community college act of 1966,"by amending section 166 (MCL 389.166), as added by 2008 PA 359. The following people submitted a card in support of HB 4184, but did not wish to speak: Doug Smith, representing the Oakland Community College. Dr. Doug Trevor Kubatzke, representing the Lake Michigan College. Representative Farrington testified in support of HB 4184. Mike Hansen representing the Michigan Community College Association; Carly Charrette, representing Universal Tool Equipment and Controls; Jennifer Kathawa, representing Drake Enterprises Inc.; Patrick Rouse, representing Macomb Community College; and Lisa Frieberger representing Grand Rapids Community College, testified in support of HB 4184. Questions and discussion followed. The Chair laid HB 4675 before the committee: HB 4675 (Rep. Afendoulis) A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled "The revised school code," by amending sections 1311d and 1311g (MCL 380.1311d and 380.1311g), section 1311d as added by 1999 PA 23 and section 1311g as amended by 2018 PA 42. Representative Vaupel moved to adopt substitute (H-2) to HB 4675. The motion prevailed 14-0- 0: FAVORABLE ROLL CALL Yeas: Reps. Hornberger, Crawford, Vaupel, Reilly, Hall, Markkanen, O'Malley, Wakeman, Camilleri, Sowerby, Brenda Carter, Tyrone Carter, Koleszar, Stone. Nays: None. Pass: None. Representative Afendoulis and Heidi Cate, superintendent of Lighthouse Academy, testified in support of HB 4675. The following people submitted a card in support of HB 4675, but did not wish to speak: Alicia Urbain, representing the Michigan Association of Public School Administrators. There being no further business before the committee, Rep. Pamela Hornberger adjourned the meeting at 10:04 AM.
