- HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON COMMERCE AND TOURISM REP. STEVE MARINO CHAIR COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Thursday, March 5, 2020 9:00 a.m. Room 327, House Office Building The House Standing Committee on Commerce and Tourism was called to order by the Chair. The Chair requested attendance be called: Present: Reps. Marino, Wendzel, Reilly, Wakeman, Wozniak, Cambensy, Camilleri, Hope, Manoogian, Robinson. Absent/Excused: Rep. Schroeder. Representative Wendzel moved to adopt the meeting minutes from February 20, 2020. There being no objection, the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. The Chair laid SB 432 before the committee: SB 432 (Sen. Horn) A bill to amend 1984 PA 270, entitled "Michigan strategic fund act," by amending section 74 (MCL 125.2074), as amended by 2006 PA 616. Senator Kenneth Horn, the bill sponsor, explained SB 432 and introduced James Richter, Founder and President of Michigan Research Institute, who testified in support of SB 432. Questions followed. Greg Bird, Managing Director of Legislative and External Affairs at the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, submitted a card in support of SB 432, but did not wish to speak. Jen Rigterink, Legislative Associate in the State and Federal Affairs Office of the Michigan Municipal League, submitted a card with no position. Judy Allen, Director of the Michigan Townships Association, submitted a card as neutral on SB 432. The Chair laid HB 4658 before the committee: HB 4658 (Rep. Chirkun) A bill to amend 1976 PA 331, entitled "Michigan consumer protection act," by amending section 3 (MCL 445.903), as amended by 2018 PA 211, and by adding section 3l. Representative John Chirkun, bill sponsor, explained HB 4658. Questions followed. A copy of his handout is attached. The following individuals submitted a testimony card in support of HB 4658, but did not wish to speak: Rande Johnson, and Merissa Kovach, Policy Strategist for the American Civil Liberties Union. A copy of her written testimony is attached. Matthew Levin, Legislative Policy Manager in the Executive Office of the Secretary of State, submitted a testimony card stating the department is neutral on HB 4658. The Chair laid before the committee a presentation on Pure Michigan. David Lorenz, representing Vice-President of Travel Michigan in the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, did a PowerPoint presentation on the Pure Michigan Meanwhile in Michigan Campaign. Questions followed. Representative Wakeman moved to excuse Representative Schroeder from the meeting. There being no objection the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. There being no further business before the committee, Representative Reilly moved to adjourn the Committee. There being no objection, the motion prevailed by unanimous consent.
