- HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON MILITARY, VETERANS AND HOMELAND SECURITY REP. BEAU M LAFAVE CHAIR COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Wednesday, June 17, 2020 8:30 AM Room 521, House Office Building The House Committee on Military, Veterans and Homeland Security was called to order by Chair LaFave. At 8:30 AM, the Chair laid the committee at ease. At 8:38 AM, the Chair called the committee back to order. The Chair requested attendance be called: Present: Reps. LaFave, Mueller, Marino, Afendoulis, Markkanen, Jones, Chirkun, Tyrone Carter, Manoogian. Absent: None. Excused: None. Representative Mueller moved to adopt the meeting minutes from May 27, 2020. There being no objection, the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. The Chair laid HR 257 before the committee: HR 257 (Rep. LaFave) A resolution to reaffirm the sovereignty of tribal nations and to encourage the Michigan Attorney General to not infringe on that sovereignty. The following people submitted a card in support of HR 257, but did not wish to speak: Bryan Newland, representing the Bay Mills Indian Community. Representative Markkanen moved to report out HR 257 with recommendation. The motion prevailed 6-3-0: FAVORABLE ROLL CALL Yeas: Reps. LaFave, Mueller, Marino, Afendoulis, Markkanen, Jones. Nays: Reps. Chirkun, Tyrone Carter, Manoogian. Pass: None. Representative Jones moved to reconsider the vote by which HR 257 was reported with recommendation. The motion prevailed 6-3-0: FAVORABLE ROLL CALL Yeas: Reps. LaFave, Mueller, Marino, Afendoulis, Markkanen, Jones. Nays: Reps. Chirkun, Tyrone Carter, Manoogian. Pass: None. Representative Markkanen moved to report out HR 257 with recommendation. The motion prevailed 5-4-0: FAVORABLE ROLL CALL Yeas: Reps. LaFave, Mueller, Marino, Afendoulis, Markkanen. Nays: Reps. Jones, Chirkun, Tyrone Carter, Manoogian. Pass: None. There being no further business before the committee, Rep. Beau LaFave adjourned the meeting at 8:41 AM.
