BOX 30036 LANSING, MICHIGAN 48909-7536 PHONE: (517) 373-2420 FAX: (517) 373-2764 **DRAFT** COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES November 12, 2019 A meeting of the Senate Committee on Education and Career Readiness was scheduled for Tuesday, November 12, 2019, at 12:00 noon, in the 1300 Room of the Binsfeld Office Building. The agenda summary is as follows: 1. Testimony regarding SB 600 and SB 601 (Sen. Bumstead). The Chair called the meeting to order at 12:01 p.m. He instructed the clerk to call the roll. At that time, the following members were present: Chair Theis, Sens. Horn, Bumstead, Runestad, Daley, Polehanki and Geiss, a quorum was present. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Horn to adopt the meeting minutes from November 5, 2019. Without objection, the minutes were adopted. The Chair invited the following individuals to present testimony regarding SB 600 and SB 601: Ryan Shaw, Michigan Music Education Association – Opposition Cindy Larsen, Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce – Support John Workman, Eagle Alloy, Inc. – Support Ryan Bennett, West Michigan Plubers, Fitters, and Service Trades – Support The Chair invited the following individuals to present testimony regarding SB 600: Superintendent Michael Rice, Michigan Department of Education – No Position Venessa Keesler, Michigan Department of Education – No Position Bob Kefgen, Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals – Opposition Amy Zaagman, Michigan Council for Maternal and Child Health – Opposition The Chair read the cards of those individuals not wishing to testify before the committee regarding SB 600: Dr. David Michaelson, Michigan Education Association – Support Daniel Hurley, Michigan Association of State Universities – Opposition The Chair read the cards of those individuals not wishing to testify before the committee regarding SB 601: Andrew Schepers, Healthy Kids, Healthy Michigan – Opposition The Chair read the cards of those individuals not wishing to testify before the committee regarding SB 600 and SB 601: Dr. Marci Scott, Michigan Fitness Foundation – Opposition Page 1 of 2 Rusty Merchant, Grand Rapids Public Schools – Support Alex Morris, Michigan Bankers Association – Support Chris Glass, West Michigan Talent Triangle – Support Dawn Crandall, Home Builders Association of Michigan – Support There being no further business before the committee, the Chair moved to adjourn the committee.
