BOX 30036 LANSING, MICHIGAN 48909-7536 PHONE: (517) 373-2420 FAX: (517) 373-2764 COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES February 11, 2020 A meeting of the Senate Committee on Education and Career Readiness was scheduled for Tuesday, February 11, 2020, at 12:00 noon, in the 1300 Room of the Binsfeld Office Building. The agenda summary is as follows: 1. Testimony regarding SB 594 (Sen. Schmidt). 2. Testimony regarding SB 657 (Sen. Theis). The Chair called the meeting to order at 12:00 noon He instructed the Clerk to call the roll. At that time, the following members were present: Chair Theis, Sen.(s) Horn, Bumstead, Runestad, Daley, Polehanki and Geiss, a quorum was present. At 12:01 p.m., the Chair recessed the committee. At 12:05 p.m., the Chair reconvened the committee. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Horn to adopt the meeting minutes from February 4, 2020. Without objection, the minutes were adopted. The Chair invited the following individuals to present testimony regarding SB 594: Madline Dasen, Office of Senator Schmidt – Support Mallory DePrekel, CIS of Michigan – Support The Chair read the cards of those individuals not wishing to testify before the committee regarding SB 594: Traci Lambert, Citizen – Neutral Ellen Hoekstra, Brandon Communities Schools – Support Amy Chapman, Michigan Association of School Social Workers – Oppose Jean Doss, Michigan School Counselors Association – Oppose Amy Campbell, Michigan Association of School Psychologists – Oppose Julie Rove, AFT Michigan – Support Carol Paine-McGovern, Kent School Services Network – Support The Chair invited the following individuals to present testimony regarding SB 657: David Saba, Teachers of Tomorrow – Support Page 1 of 2 Matt Outlaw, Brandon School District – Support The Chair read the cards of those individuals not wishing to testify before the committee regarding SB 657: Dr. David Michelson, Michigan Education Association – Oppose Megan Morris, Central Michigan University – Oppose Peter Spadafore, Michigan Association of Superintendents – Support Matt Kurta, ESA Legislative Group – Support Chris Glass, West Michigan Talent Triangle – Support Jennifer Smith, Michigan Association of School Boards – Support There being no further business before the committee, the Chair moved to adjourn the committee.
