BOX 30036 LANSING, MICHIGAN 48909-7536 PHONE: (517) 373-7670 FAX: (517) 373-5958 COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES May 19, 2020 A meeting of the Senate Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety was scheduled for Tuesday, May 19, 2020, at 8:30 a.m., in the Harry T. Gast Appropriations Room, 3rd Floor, Capitol Building. The agenda summary is as follows: 1. Reported HB 5709 (Rep. Sheppard) with recommendation and immediate effect. The Chair called the meeting to order at 8:39 a.m. He instructed the Clerk to call the roll. At that time, the following members were present: Chair Lucido, Sen (s). VanderWall, Barrett, Johnson, Runestad, Chang and Irwin, a quorum was present. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. VanderWall to adopt the meeting minutes from March 12, 2020. Without objection, the minutes were adopted. The Chair invited Rep. Sheppard to summarize HB 5709. Sen. Chang offered an (S-2) version of HB 5709 and summarized the (S-2) for the committee. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Chang to adopt the (S-2) version of HB 5709. The vote was as follows: Yeas: Sen (s). Chang and Irwin Nays: Chair Lucido, Sen.(s) VanderWall, Barrett, Johnson and Runestad The motion failed and the (S-2) was not adopted. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Johnson to report HB 5709 to the floor with recommendation that it pass. The vote was as follows: Yeas: Chair Lucido, Sen.(s) VanderWall, Barrett, Johnson, Runestad and Irwin Nays: Sen. Chang The motion prevailed and the bill was reported. The Chair moved to recommend immediate effect for HB 5709. Without objection, immediate effect was recommended. There being no further business before the committee, the Chair moved to adjourn the committee. Without objection, the committee was adjourned at 9:51 a.m. Date Adopted by Committee: 06/04/2020
