BOX 30036 LANSING, MICHIGAN 48909-7536 PHONE: (517) 373-7840 FAX: (517) 373-3932 COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES July 22, 2020 A meeting of the Senate Committee on Oversight was scheduled for Wednesday, July 22, 2020, at 2:00 p.m., in the 403 Room of the Capitol Building. A summary of the agenda is as follows: 1. A presentation by Director Heidi Washington, of the Michigan Department of Corrections, regarding the Department's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Chair called the meeting to order at 2:07 p.m. He instructed the Clerk to call the roll. At that time, the following members were present: Chair McBroom, Sen.(s) Lucido, Theis, MacDonald and Irwin, a quorum was present. The Chair invited the committee to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Theis to adopt the meeting minutes from July 8, 2020. Without objection, the minutes were adopted. The Chair introduced Director Heidi Washington with the Michigan Department of Corrections and invited her to address the committee. Director Washington shared a prepared statement with the committee. Member question and discussion followed concerning COVID-19 testing procedures, social distancing within Department of Correction facilities, vendor and visitor contact with inmates, recidivism of inmates released amid the pandemic, and the level of correspondence between inmates and their families while visitation is not allowed. There being no further business before the committee, the Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Theis to adjourn the committee at 3:37 p.m. Without objection, the committee was adjourned.
