BOX 30036 LANSING, MICHIGAN 48909-7536 PHONE: (517) 373-7840 FAX: (517) 373-3932 COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES September 22, 2020 A meeting of the Senate Committee on Oversight was scheduled for Tuesday, September 22, 2020, at 3:30 p.m., in Room 403 of the Capitol Building. The agenda summary is as follows: 1. Testimony regarding SB 828 (Sen. Runestad). 3. Testimony regarding SB 829 (Sen. Barrett). The Chair called the meeting to order at 3:33 p.m. He instructed the Clerk to call the roll. At that time, the following members were present: Chair McBroom, Sen.(s) Lucido, MacDonald and Irwin, a quorum was present. The Chair invited the committee to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Lucido, to excuse absent members from the meeting. Without objection, Sen. Theis was excused from the meeting. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Lucido to adopt the meeting minutes from September 17, 2020. Without objection, the minutes were adopted. The Chair brought up SB's 828 and 829, and invited Sen. Runestad to summarize the bills. The Chair invited the following individuals to present testimony via Zoom regarding SB's 828 - 829: - David Knezek, Michigan Department of Attorney General – Oppose. Member questions followed. - Polly Synk, Michigan Department of Attorney General – Oppose. Member questions followed. - Daniel Sonneveldt, Michigan Department of Attorney General – Oppose. Member questions followed. - Cary Silverman, American Tort Reform Association – Support. Member questions followed. The Chair invited the following individuals to present testimony regarding SB's 828 - 829: - Wendy Block, Michigan Chamber – Support. Member questions followed. The Chair read the cards of those individuals not wishing to testify before the committee regarding SB's 828 -829: Bill Flory, Michigan Association for Justice – Oppose Amanda Fisher, NFIB Michigan – Support Dave Grecco, Michigan Manufacturers Association – Support Tim Ward, State Farm – Support Todd Tennis, Negligence Law Section, State Bar of Michigan - Oppose There being no further business before the committee, Sen.
