BOX 30036 LANSING, MICHIGAN 48909-7536 PHONE: (517) 373-6920 FAX: (517) 373-2751 COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES May 13, 2021 A meeting of the Senate Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety was scheduled for Thursday, May 13, 2021, at 9:05 a.m., in Room 403 of the Capitol Building. The agenda summary is as follow: 1. Reported SB 408 (Sen. Victory) with recommendation and immediate effect. The Chair called the meeting to order at 9:06 a.m. He instructed the Clerk to call the roll. At that time, the following members were present: Chair Victory, Sen.(s) VanderWall, Barrett, Johnson, Runestad, and Chang, a quorum was present. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Barrett to adopt the meeting minutes from April 29, 2021. Without objection, the minutes were adopted. The Chair brought up SB 408 and summarized the bill. The Chair invited the following individuals to present testimony regarding SB 408: Tom Boyd, State Court Administrative Office – No position Hon. Virgil Smith, Sr., Wayne County Circuit Court – Support The cards were read of those individuals not wishing to present testimony regarding SB 408: Randy Oram, International Outdoor – Support Bill Flory, Michigan Association for Justice – Opposition The Chair recessed the committee at 9:26 a.m. The Chair reconvened the meeting at 9:27 a.m. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Runestad to report SB 408 to the floor with recommendation that the bill pass. The vote was as follows: Yeas: Chair Victory, Sen.(s) VanderWall, Barrett, Johnson, and Runestad Nays: None Pass: Sen.(s) Chang The motion prevailed and the bill was reported. The Chair moved to recommend immediate effect for SB 408. Without objection, immediate effect was recommended. The Chair moved to excuse absent members. Without objection, Sen. Irwin was excused. There being no further business before the committee, the Chair moved to adjourn the committee. Without objection, the committee was adjourned at 9:28 a.m. Date adopted by committee: 05/27/2021 2
