BOX 30036 LANSING, MICHIGAN 48909-7536 PHONE: (517) 373-1636 FAX: (517) 373-1453 COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES December 8, 2021 A meeting of the Senate Committee on Elections was scheduled for Wednesday, December 8, 2021, at 2:00 p.m., in the 1300 Room of the Binsfeld Office Building. The agenda summary is as follows: 1. Reported SB 279 (S-1) (Sen. Johnson) with recommendation and immediate effect. The Chair called the meeting to order at 2:02 p.m. She instructed the Clerk to call the roll. At that time, the following members were present: Chair Johnson, Sen.(s) McBroom, VanderWall, and Wojno, a quorum was present. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. McBroom to adopt the meeting minutes from November 10, 2021. Without objection, the minutes were adopted. The Chair offered an (S-1) version of SB 279. The Chair invited Garrett Wheat, of the Chair's office, to summarize the (S-1) version of SB 279. The Chair invited the following individuals to present testimony regarding SB 279: Joe Rozell, Michigan Association of County Clerks and Oakland County – Oppose Alex Weddon, Pure Integrity for Michigan Elections – Support The Chair read the cards of those individuals not wishing to testify before the committee regarding SB 279 (S- 1): Bill Zaagman, Michigan Association of Municipal Clerks – Oppose Bill Zaagman, Michigan Association of County Clerks – Oppose The Chair read the cards of those individuals not wishing to testify before the committee regarding SB 279: Christina Schlitt and Paula Bowman, League of Women Voters of Michigan – Oppose Jamie Lyons-Eddy, Voters Not Politicians – Oppose The Michigan Democratic Party – Oppose Shira Roza, Promote the Vote – Oppose Page 1 of 2 The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. McBroom to adopt the (S-1) version of SB 279. The vote was as follows: Yeas: Chair Johnson, Sen.(s) McBroom, VanderWall, and Wojno Nays: None The motion prevailed and the (S-1) was adopted. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. McBroom to report the (S-1) version of SB 279 to the floor with recommendation that it pass. The vote was as follows: Yeas: Chair Johnson, Sen.(s) McBroom and VanderWall Nays: Sen. Wojno The motion prevailed and the bill was reported. The Chair made a motion to recommend immediate effect for SB 279 (S-1). Without objection, immediate effect was recommended. There being no further business before the committee, the Chair moved to adjourn the committee.
