BOX 30036 LANSING, MICHIGAN 48909-7536 PHONE: (517) 373-2420 FAX: (517) 373-2764 COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES February 1, 2022 A meeting of the Senate Committee on Education and Career Readiness was scheduled for Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at 12:00 noon, in the 1300 Room of the Binsfeld Office Building. The agenda summary is as follows: 1. Testimony regarding SB 777 (Sen. Nesbitt) and SB 778 (Sen. Brinks). 2. Reported HB 4074 (S-1) (Rep. Brann) with recommendation. 3. Testimony regarding SB 801 (Sen. LaSata). The Chair called the meeting to order at 12:02 p.m.. She instructed the Clerk to call the roll. At that time, the following members were present: Chair Theis, Sen.(s) Horn, Runestad, Daley, Huizenga, Polehanki and Geiss, a quorum was present. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Horn to adopt the meeting minutes from January 18, 2022. Without objection, the minutes were adopted. The Chair invited the following individuals to present testimony regarding SB 777 and SB 778: Sen. Aric Nesbitt – Support Sen. Winnie Brinks – Support Heidi Cate, Lighthouse Academy – Support The Chair read the cards of those individuals not wishing to testify before the committee regarding SB 777 and SB 778: Sheryl Kennedy, Michigan Department of Education – Opposition The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Horn to adopt the (S-1) version of HB 4074. The vote was as follows: Yeas: Chair Theis, Sen.(s) Horn, Runestad, Daley, and Huizenga. Nays: Sen.(s) Polehanki and Geiss. The motion prevailed and the (S-1) was adopted. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Daley to report the (S-1) version of HB 4074 to the floor with recommendation that it pass. The vote was as follows: Yeas: Chair Theis, Sen.(s) Horn, Runestad, Daley, and Huizenga. Nays: Sen.(s) Polehanki and Geiss. Page 1 of 2 The motion prevailed and the bill was reported. The Chair invited the following individuals to present testimony regarding SB 801: Sen. Kim LaSata – Support David Guenthner, Mackinac Center – Support The Chair read the cards of those individuals not wishing to testify before the committee regarding SB 801: Beth DeShone, Great Lakes Education Project – Support Katrina Morris, Michigan Association of Pupil Transportation – Opposition Howard Dashney, Pupil Transportation Operation and Management Institute – Opposition There being no further business before the committee, the Chair moved to adjourn the committee.
