- HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON FAMILIES AND VETERANS REP. KATHY SCHMALTZ CHAIR COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, March 3, 2026 Noon. Room 307, House Office Building The House Committee on Families and Veterans was called to order by Chair Schmaltz. The Chair requested attendance to be called: Present: Reps. Schmaltz, Wozniak, Fox, Johnsen, Thompson, Pavlov, Woolford, Young, Byrnes, Rheingans and Xiong. Absent: None. Excused: None. Representative Thompson moved to adopt the meeting minutes from February 24, 2026. There being no objection, the motion prevailed with unanimous consent. The Chair laid HB 4954 before the committee: HB 4954 (Rep. Woolford) A bill to amend 1996 PA 195, entitled "Police officer's and fire fighter's survivor tuition grant act," by amending the title and sections 1, 2, 3, and 4 (MCL 390.1241, 390.1242, 390.1243, and 390.1244), the title and sections 1 and 4 as amended by 2012 PA 470 and sections 2 and 3 as amended by 2021 PA 127. Representative Woolford, testified in support of HB 4954. Questions and discussions followed. Edwin Moore, representing the Livingston County Sheriff's Office and Medical Examiner's Office, testified in support of HB 4954. Questions and discussions followed. The following people submitted a card in support of HB 4954, but did not wish to speak: Amanda Wallace, representing the Michigan Association of Medical Examiners. Jonathan Black, representing Livingston County. The Chair laid HB 5387 before the committee: HB 5387 (Rep. Cavitt) A bill to amend 2012 PA 176, entitled "Mozelle senior or vulnerable adult medical alert act," by amending section 2 (MCL 28.712). Representative Pavlov moved to report out HB 5387 with recommendation. The motion prevailed 7-0-4: FAVORABLE ROLL CALL Yeas: Reps. Schmaltz, Wozniak, Fox, Johnsen, Thompson, Pavlov and Woolford. Nays: None. Pass: Reps. Young, Byrnes, Rheingans and Xiong. There being no further business before the committee, Chair Schmaltz adjourned the meeting at 12:24 PM.
