BOX 30036 LANSING, MICHIGAN 48909-7536 PHONE: (517) 373-2420 FAX: (517) 373-2764 **DRAFT** COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES June 7, 2022 A meeting of the Senate Committee on Education and Career Readiness was scheduled for Tuesday, June 7, 2022, at 12:00 noon, in the 1300 Room of the Binsfeld Office Building. The agenda summary is as follows: 1. Reported HB 5097 (Rep. Beeler) with recommendation. The Chair called the meeting to order at 12:06 p.m.. She instructed the Clerk to call the roll. At that time, the following members were present: Chair Theis, Sen.(s) Horn, Runestad, Daley, Huizenga, Polehanki and Geiss, a quorum was present. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Runestad to adopt the meeting minutes from May 17, 2022. Without objection, the minutes were adopted. At 12:07 p.m., Sen.(s) Polehanki and Geiss left the meeting. The Chair invited the following individuals to present testimony regarding HB 5097: Rep. Andrew Beeler – Support The Chair read the cards of those individuals not wishing to testify before the committee regarding HB 5097: Bob Kefgen, Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals – Opposition Judy Karandjeff, League of Women Voters of Michigan – Opposition Jennifer Smith, Michigan Association of School Boards – Opposition Rachel Richards, Michigan League for Public Policy – Opposition Sheryl Kennedy, Michigan Department of Education – Opposition Jenell Mansfield, AFT of Michigan – Opposition Matt Scheuller, Michigan Association of Superintendents and Administrators – Opposition David Michelson, Michigan Education Association – Opposition Jerome Reid, Michigan Department of Civil Rights – Opposition Merissa Kovach, ACLU of Michigan – Opposition The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Runestad to report HB 5097 to the floor with recommendation that it pass. The vote was as follows: Page 1 of 2 Yeas: Chair Theis, Sen.(s) Runestad, Daley, and Huizenga. Nays: None Pass: Sen.(s) Horn. The motion prevailed and the bill was reported. There being no further business before the committee, the Chair moved to adjourn the committee.
