HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE REP. NANCY DEBOER CHAIR COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Wednesday, March 11, 2026 10:30 AM Room 327, House Office Building The House Committee on Education and Workforce was called to order by Chair DeBoer. The Chair requested attendance to be called: Present: Reps. DeBoer, Linting, Paquette, Fox, Kunse, St. Germaine, Pavlov, Wilson, Koleszar and Weiss. Absent: Rep. Byrnes. Excused: Rep. Byrnes. Representative Linting moved to adopt the meeting minutes from March 04, 2026. There being no objection, the motion prevailed with unanimous consent. The Chair laid HB 5697 before the committee: HB 5697 (Rep. DeBoer) A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled "The revised school code," (MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1531k. At 10:32 AM, the Chair laid the committee at ease. At 10:32 AM, the Chair called the committee back to order. State Superintendent Dr. Glenn Malyeko testified in support of HB 5697. Questions and discussions followed. Representative DeBoer testified in support of HB 5697. Questions and discussion followed. Alicia Urbain, representing the Michigan Association of Public School Academies, testified in support of HB 5697. Christine Bolen & Kelly Kujala, representing the Saginaw ISD, testified in support of HB 5697. The following people submitted a card in support of HB 5697, but did not wish to speak: Melissa Horste, representing MiLEAP. Molly Macek, representing the Mackinac Center for Public Policy. Beth DeShone, representing the MI Forward Network. The chair laid a presentation from the Michigan FFA before the committee. Mark Forbush, a Michigan FFA State Advisor and Agriculture Educator, spoke to the committee about the FFA programs in Michigan schools. Questions and discussion followed. Representative Linting moved to excuse Representative Byrnes from the meeting. There being no objection the motion prevailed by unanimous consent.
