BOX 30036 LANSING, MICHIGAN 48909-7536 PHONE: (517) 373-7350 FAX: (517) 373-9228 COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES March 14, 2023 A meeting of the Senate Committee on Education was scheduled for Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at 1:30 p.m., in the 1100 Room of the Binsfeld Office Building. The agenda summary is as follows: 1. Testimony regarding SB 161 (Sen. Geiss) and SB 162 (Sen. McCann). 2. Adopted (S-1) substitute to SB 162 (Sen. McCann). The Chair called the meeting to order at 1:30 p.m.. She instructed the Clerk to call the roll. At that time, the following members were present: Chair Polehanki, Sen.(s) Geiss, Chang, Camilleri, McDonald Rivet, Damoose and Johnson, a quorum was present. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. McDonald Rivet to adopt the meeting minutes from February 21, 2023. Without objection, the minutes were adopted. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Geiss to adopt the (S-1) version of SB 162. The vote was as follows: Yeas: Chair Polehanki, Sen.(s) Geiss, Chang, Camilleri, McDonald Rivet, Damoose, and Johnson. Nays: None The motion prevailed and the (S-1) was adopted. The Chair invited the following individuals to present testimony regarding SB 161 and SB 162: Dr. Daveda Colbert, Wayne RESA – Support Sheryl Kennedy and Kelli Brozanski, Michigan Department of Education – Support Lou Steigerwald, Norway-Vulcan Schools – Support Matt Scheuller, Michigan Association of Superintendents and Administrators – Support The Chair read the cards of those individuals not wishing to testify before the committee regarding SB 161 and SB 162: Carol Weaver, Detroit Public Schools Community District – Support Joe Devault, Macomb ISD – Support Molly Macek, Mackinac Center – Support Paul Liabenow, Michigan Elementary and Middle School Principals Association – Support Dirk Weeldreyer, School Equity Caucus – Support David Randels, Oakland Schools – Support Page 1 of 2 Mike Latvis, Wayne RESA – Support Bob Kefgen, Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals – Support Chris Glass, Education Advocates of West Michigan – Support Jerry Johnson, Barry, Branch, Calhoun, Jackson, Lenawee, and Monroe ISDs – Support There being no further business before the committee, the Chair moved to adjourn the committee.
