BOX 30036 LANSING, MICHIGAN 48909-7536 PHONE: (517) 373-7350 FAX: (517) 373-9228 COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES March 21, 2023 A meeting of the Senate Committee on Education was scheduled for Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at 1:30 p.m., in the 1100 Room of the Binsfeld Office Building. The agenda summary is as follows: 1. Reported SB 161 (S-1) (Sen. Geiss) with recommendation. 2. Reported SB 162 (S-2) (Sen. McCann) with recommendation. The Chair called the meeting to order at 1:33 p.m.. She instructed the Clerk to call the roll. At that time, the following members were present: Chair Polehanki, Sen.(s) Geiss, Chang, Camilleri, McDonald Rivet, Damoose and Johnson, a quorum was present. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Geiss to adopt the meeting minutes from March 14, 2023. Without objection, the minutes were adopted. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Geiss to adopt the (S-1) version of SB 161. The vote was as follows: Yeas: Chair Polehanki, Sen.(s) Geiss, Chang, Camilleri, McDonald Rivet, Damoose, and Johnson. Nays: None The motion prevailed and the (S-1) was adopted. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Damoose to adopt the (S-2) version of SB 162. The vote was as follows: Yeas: Chair Polehanki, Sen.(s) Geiss, Chang, Camilleri, McDonald Rivet, Damoose, and Johnson. Nays: None The motion prevailed and the (S-2) was adopted. The Chair read the cards of those individuals not wishing to testify before the committee regarding SB 161 and SB 162: Jennifer Smith, Michigan Association of School Boards – Support Matt Kurta, ESA Legislative Group – Support Peter Spadafore, Alliance for Student Opportunity – Support David Randels, Oakland Schools – Support Beth Berglin, Kalamazoo Community Foundation – Support The Chair read the cards of those individuals not wishing to testify before the committee regarding SB 162: Page 1 of 2 David Randels, Michigan Manufacturers Association – Support The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Geiss to report the (S-1) version of SB 161 to the floor with recommendation that it pass. The vote was as follows: Yeas: Chair Polehanki, Sen.(s) Geiss, Chang, Camilleri, McDonald Rivet, Damoose, and Johnson. Nays: None The motion prevailed and the bill was reported. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Damoose to report the (S-2) version of SB 162 to the floor with recommendation that it pass. The vote was as follows: Yeas: Chair Polehanki, Sen.(s) Geiss, Chang, Camilleri, McDonald Rivet, Damoose, and Johnson. Nays: None The motion prevailed and the bill was reported. There being no further business before the committee, the Chair moved to adjourn the committee.
