BOX 30036 LANSING, MICHIGAN 48909-7536 PHONE: (517) 373-7350 FAX: (517) 373-9228 COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES April 13, 2023 A meeting of the Senate Committee on Education was scheduled for Thursday, April 13, 2023, at 4:00 p.m., in the 1100 Room of the Binsfeld Office Building. The agenda summary is as follows: 1. Testimony regarding HB 4166 (Rep. Koleszar). The Chair called the meeting to order at 4:01 p.m.. She instructed the Clerk to call the roll. At that time, the following members were present: Chair Polehanki, Sen.(s) Geiss, Chang, Camilleri, Damoose and Johnson, a quorum was present. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Camilleri to adopt the meeting minutes from March 21, 2023. Without objection, the minutes were adopted. The Chair made a motion to excuse absent members from the meeting. Without objection, Sen. McDonald Rivet was excused from the meeting. The Chair invited the following individuals to present testimony regarding HB 4166: Rep. Matt Koleszar – Support Sue Carnell and Chris Janzer, Michigan Department of Education – Support The Chair read the cards of those individuals not wishing to testify before the committee regarding HB 4166: Brian Shoaf, Detroit Regional Chamber – Opposition Beth DeShone, GLEP Education Fund – Opposition Molly Macek, Mackinac Center for Public Policy – Opposition Mike Latvis, Wayne RESA – Support David Randels, Oakland Schools – Support Bob Kefgen, Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals – Support Chris Glass, Education Advocates of West Michigan – Support Peter Spadafore, Michigan Alliance for Student Opportunity – Support Jennifer Smith, Michigan Association of School Boards – Support Dirk Weeldreyer, School Equity Caucus – Support Paul Liabenow, Michigan Elementary and Middle School Principals Association – Support David Michelson, Michigan Education Association – Support Page 1 of 2 Matt Scheuller, Michigan Association of Superintendents and Administrators – Support Jerry Johnson, Barry, Branch, Calhoun Jackson, Lenawee, and Monroe ISDs – Support There being no further business before the committee, the Chair moved to adjourn the committee.
