BOX 30036 LANSING, MICHIGAN 48909-7536 PHONE: (517) 373-7350 FAX: (517) 373-9228 COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES October 17, 2023 A meeting of the Senate Committee on Education was scheduled for Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at 1:30 p.m., in the 1100 Room of the Binsfeld Office Building. The agenda summary is as follows: 1. Reported SB 395 (S-3) (Sen. Polehanki) with recommendation. 2. Reported SB 396 (Sen. McDonald Rivet) with recommendation. 3. Testimony regarding SB 463 (Sen. Camilleri). The Chair called the meeting to order at 1:34 p.m.. She instructed the Clerk to call the roll. At that time, the following members were present: Chair Polehanki, Sen.(s) Geiss, Chang, Camilleri, McDonald Rivet, Damoose and Johnson, a quorum was present. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Geiss to adopt the meeting minutes from October 10, 2023. Without objection, the minutes were adopted. The Chair read the cards of those individuals not wishing to testify before the committee regarding SB 395 and SB 396: Ryan Sebolt, Michigan AFL-CIO – Support Joanne Galloway, Center for Change Northern Michigan Advocacy – Support Robert Joerg, Michigan Laborers District Council – Support Sheryl Kennedy, Michigan Department of Education – Opposition The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Geiss to report the (S-3) version of SB 395 to the floor with recommendation that it pass. The vote was as follows: Yeas: Chair Polehanki, Sen.(s) Geiss, Chang, Camilleri, and McDonald Rivet. Nays: Sen.(s) Damoose and Johnson. The motion prevailed and the bill was reported. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Geiss to report SB 396 to the floor with recommendation that it pass. The vote was as follows: Yeas: Chair Polehanki, Sen.(s) Geiss, Chang, Camilleri, and McDonald Rivet. Nays: Sen.(s) Damoose and Johnson. The motion prevailed and the bill was reported.
