BOX 30036 LANSING, MICHIGAN 48909-7536 PHONE: (517) 373-3447 FAX: (517) 373-5849 COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES October 18, 2023 A meeting of the Senate Committee on Oversight was scheduled for Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at 8:30 a.m., in the 1200 Room of the Binsfeld Office Building. The agenda summary is as follows: 1. Testimony regarding SB 493 (Sen. Santana). The Chair called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m.. He instructed the Clerk to call the roll. At that time, the following members were present: Chair Singh, Sen.(s) McMorrow, Geiss, Polehanki and McBroom, a quorum was present. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. McBroom to adopt the meeting minutes from September 13, 2023. Without objection, the minutes were adopted. The Chair made a motion to excuse absent members from the meeting. Without objection, Sen. Lindsey was excused from the meeting. The Chair invited the following individuals to present testimony regarding SB 493: Sen. Sylvia Santana – Support Keith Barber, Michigan Corrections Ombudsman – Support Charlene Burkett, Indiana Department of Corrections Ombudsman – Support Maria Goellner, Families for Justice Reform – Support Meghann Sanger, William Walker, and Lois Pullano, Citizens for Prison Reform – Support Kyle Kaminski, Michigan Department of Corrections – Opposition The Chair read the cards of those individuals not wishing to testify before the committee regarding SB 493: Jack Wagner, Michigan Justice Advocacy – Support Tony Gant, Nation Outside – Support John Cooper, Safe and Just Michigan – Support At 9:19 a.m., the Chair left the meeting and the Vice Chair presided. There being no further business before the committee, the Chair entertained a motion by Sen. McMorrow to adjourn the committee at 9:24 a.m.. Without objection, the committee was adjourned.
