BOX 30036 LANSING, MICHIGAN 48909-7536 PHONE: (517) 373-7350 FAX: (517) 373-9228 COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES October 31, 2023 A meeting of the Senate Committee on Education was scheduled for Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at 1:30 p.m., in the 1100 Room of the Binsfeld Office Building. The agenda summary is as follows: 1. Reported HB 5021 (Rep. Matt Koleszar) with recommendation. The Chair called the meeting to order at 1:33 p.m.. She instructed the Clerk to call the roll. At that time, the following members were present: Chair Polehanki, Sen.(s) Geiss, Chang, Camilleri, McDonald Rivet, Damoose and Johnson, a quorum was present. The Chair instructed the clerk to read the cards of those individuals not wishing to testify before the committee regarding HB 5021: Tammy Daenzer, MEA – Support Jenell Manskeld, AFT Michigan – Support Peter Spadafore, MI Alliance for Student Opportunity – Support David Randels, Oakland Schools – Support Neil DeSouza, Office of Retirement Services/DTMB – Support James Hohman, Mackinac Center for Public Policy – Opposition Trevor Kubatzke, Lake Michigan College – Opposition The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Geiss to report HB 5021 to the floor with recommendation that it pass. The vote was as follows: Yeas: Chair Polehanki, Sen.(s) Geiss, Chang, Camilleri, and McDonald Rivet. Nays: Sen.(s) Damoose and Johnson. The motion prevailed and the bill was reported. There being no further business before the committee, the Chair moved to adjourn the committee.
