BOX 30036 LANSING, MICHIGAN 48909-7536 PHONE: (517) 373-7350 FAX: (517) 373-9228 COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES February 20, 2024 A meeting of the Senate Committee on Education was scheduled for Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at 1:30 p.m., in the 1100 Room of the Binsfeld Office Building. The agenda summary is as follows: 1. Reported SB 567 (S-2) (Sen. Irwin) with recommendation. 2. Reported SB 568 (S-2) (Sen. Polehanki) with recommendation. The Chair called the meeting to order at 1:39 p.m.. She instructed the Clerk to call the roll. At that time, the following members were present: Chair Polehanki, Sen.(s) Geiss, Chang, Camilleri, McDonald Rivet, Damoose and Johnson, a quorum was present. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Geiss to adopt the meeting minutes from February 13, 2024. Without objection, the minutes were adopted. The Chair read the cards of those individuals not wishing to testify before the committee regarding SB 567 and SB 568: Cameron Smith – No Position Heather Eckner, Michigan Parent Advocate and Attorney Coalition – Support Heather Eckner, Autism Alliance of Michigan – Support Sen. Johnson offered, and summarized, a Johnson Amendment #1, to the (S-2) version of SB 567. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Johnson to adopt the Johnson Amendment #1 to the (S-2) version of SB 567. The vote was as follows: Yeas: Sen.(s) Johnson. Nays: Chair Polehanki, Sen.(s) Geiss, Chang, Camilleri, and McDonald Rivet. Pass: Sen.(s) Damoose. The motion failed and the amendment was not adopted. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Geiss to adopt the (S-2) version of SB 567. The vote was as follows: Yeas: Chair Polehanki, Sen.(s) Geiss, Chang, Camilleri, McDonald Rivet, and Damoose. Nays: Sen.(s) Johnson. The motion prevailed and the (S-2) was adopted. The vote was as follows: Yeas: Chair Polehanki, Sen.(s) Geiss, Chang, Camilleri, McDonald Rivet, Damoose, and Johnson. Nays: None The motion prevailed and the (S-2) was adopted. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Geiss to report the (S-2) version of SB 567 to the floor with recommendation that it pass. The vote was as follows: Yeas: Chair Polehanki, Sen.(s) Geiss, Chang, Camilleri, McDonald Rivet, and Johnson. Nays: None Pass: Sen.(s) Damoose. The motion prevailed and the bill was reported. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Chang to report the (S-2) version of SB 568 to the floor with recommendation that it pass. The vote was as follows: Yeas: Chair Polehanki, Sen.(s) Geiss, Chang, Camilleri, McDonald Rivet, and Johnson. Nays: None Pass: Sen.(s) Damoose. The motion prevailed and the bill was reported. There being no further business before the committee, the Chair moved to adjourn the committee.
