BOX 30036 LANSING, MICHIGAN 48909-7536 PHONE: (517) 373-7350 FAX: (517) 373-9228 COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES March 12, 2024 A meeting of the Senate Committee on Education was scheduled for Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at 1:30 p.m., in the 1100 Room of the Binsfeld Office Building. The agenda summary is as follows: 1. Testimony regarding SB 285 (Sen. Polehanki). 2. Testimony regarding SB 744 (Sen. McDonald Rivet). The Chair called the meeting to order at 1:39 p.m.. She instructed the Clerk to call the roll. At that time, the following members were present: Chair Polehanki, Sen.(s) Geiss, Chang, Camilleri, McDonald Rivet, Damoose and Johnson, a quorum was present. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Geiss to adopt the meeting minutes from February 20, 2024. Without objection, the minutes were adopted. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Geiss to adopt the (S-1) version of SB 285. The vote was as follows: Yeas: Chair Polehanki, Sen.(s) Geiss, Chang, Camilleri, McDonald Rivet, Damoose, and Johnson. Nays: None The motion prevailed and the (S-1) was adopted. The Chair invited the following individuals to present testimony regarding SB 285: Sen. Dayna Polehanki – Support Dr. Nikolai Vitti, Detroit Public Schools Community District – Support Dr. Sheryl Kennedy, Michigan Department of Education – No Position The Chair read the cards of those individuals not wishing to testify before the committee regarding SB 285: Jennifer Smith, Michigan Association of School Boards – Support Dwayne Gill, Detroit Public Schools Community District – Support Beth DeShone, GLEP Education Fund – Opposition Molly Macek, Mackinac Center – Opposition At 1:56 p.m., Sen. Darrin Camilleri left the meeting. Page 1 of 2 The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. McDonald Rivet to adopt the (S-1) version of SB 744. The vote was as follows: Yeas: Chair Polehanki, Sen.(s) Geiss, Chang, McDonald Rivet, Damoose, and Johnson. Nays: None The motion prevailed and the (S-1) was adopted. The Chair invited the following individuals to present testimony regarding SB 744: Senator Kristen McDonald Rivet – Support The Chair read the cards of those individuals not wishing to testify before the committee regarding SB 744: Bob Kefgen, Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals – Support Tammy Daenzer, Michigan Education Association – Support Jenell Mansfield, AFT Michigan – Support There being no further business before the committee, the Chair moved to adjourn the committee.
