BOX 30036 LANSING, MICHIGAN 48909-7536 PHONE: (517) 373-7350 FAX: (517) 373-9228 COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES April 30, 2024 A meeting of the Senate Committee on Education was scheduled for Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at 1:30 p.m., in the 1100 Room of the Binsfeld Office Building. The agenda summary is as follows: 1. Testimony regarding SB 354 (Sen. Geiss). The Chair called the meeting to order at 1:31 p.m.. She instructed the Clerk to call the roll. At that time, the following members were present: Chair Polehanki, Sen.(s) Geiss, Chang, Camilleri, McDonald Rivet, Damoose and Johnson, a quorum was present. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Geiss to adopt the meeting minutes from April 16, 2024. Without objection, the minutes were adopted. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Geiss to adopt the (S-2) version of SB 354. The vote was as follows: Yeas: Chair Polehanki, Sen.(s) Geiss, Chang, Camilleri, McDonald Rivet, Damoose, and Johnson. Nays: None The motion prevailed and the (S-2) was adopted. The Chair invited the following individuals to present testimony regarding SB 354: Sen. Erika Geiss – Support Nicholas Bellack and Geoff Phelps, Educational Testing Service – Support Sheryl Kennedy and Sean Kotke, Michigan Department of Education – Opposition Marcia Ketters, Anne Tapp Jaksa, and Beth Kubutskey, Michigan Association of Colleges of Teacher Education – Opposition The Chair read the cards of those individuals not wishing to testify before the committee regarding SB 354: Alicia Urbain, MAPSA – Support Jennifer Smith, Michigan Association of School Boards – Opposition John Kaczynski, Saginaw Valley State University – Opposition Molly Macek, Mackinac Center – Support Daniel Hurley, Michigan Association of State Universities Education Deans Council – Opposition Page 1 of 2 There being no further business before the committee, the Chair moved to adjourn the committee.
