BOX 30036 LANSING, MICHIGAN 48909-7536 PHONE: (517) 373-7350 FAX: (517) 373-9228 COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES October 23, 2024 A meeting of the Senate Committee on Education was scheduled for Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at 2:00 p.m., in the 1100 Room of the Binsfeld Office Building. The agenda summary is as follows: 1. Reported SB 354 (S-3) (Sen. Geiss) with recommendation. 2. Reported HB 5649 (Rep. Glanville) with recommendation. 3. Reported SB 995 (Sen. Chang) with recommendation. The Chair called the meeting to order at 2:00 p.m.. She instructed the Clerk to call the roll. At that time, the following members were present: Chair Polehanki, Sen.(s) Geiss, Chang, Camilleri, McDonald Rivet, Damoose and Johnson, a quorum was present. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Geiss to adopt the meeting minutes from April 30, 2024. Without objection, the minutes were adopted. The Chair invited Senator Geiss to explain S-3 substitute to SB 354. Member questions followed. The Chair read the cards of those individuals not wishing to testify before the committee regarding SB 354: Adam Majestic, Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce – Support Oakland University School of Education and Human Services – Opposition Dan Centers, MI Dept. of Education – Opposition Mia Murphy, MI Assoc. of State Universities – Opposition Steve Betz, University of Michigan - Dearborn – Opposition Jim Murray, ETS – Opposition Stephanie Glidden, University of Michigan - Flint – Opposition The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Geiss to adopt the (S-3) version of SB 354. The vote was as follows: Yeas: Chair Polehanki, Sen.(s) Geiss, Chang, Camilleri, McDonald Rivet, Damoose, and Johnson. Nays: None The motion prevailed and the (S-3) was adopted. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Geiss to report the (S-3) version of SB 354 to the floor with recommendation that it pass.
