BOX 30036 LANSING, MICHIGAN 48909-7536 PHONE: (517) 373-7840 FAX: (517) 373-3932 JOINT COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES October 8, 2019 A joint meeting of the Senate Committee on Oversight with the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Justice and Public Safety was scheduled for Tuesday, October 8, 2019, at 2:00 p.m., in the 1100 room of the Binsfeld Office Building. The agenda summary is as follows: 1. Continued discussion on health and safety issues of Michigan Correctional Officers and the Michigan Department of Corrections Wellness Unit. Chair McBroom called the Senate meeting to order at 2:02 p.m. He instructed the Clerk to call the roll. At that time, the following members were present: Chair McBroom, Sen.(s) Lucido, Theis, MacDonald and Irwin, a quorum was present. Chair McBroom invited the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Justice and Public Safety to call roll. A quorum was present. Chair McBroom invited the committees to recite the Pledge of Alliance. Chair McBroom entertained a motion by Sen. Theis to adopt the meeting minutes from June 18, 2019. Without objection, the minutes were adopted. Chair McBroom introduced Lynn Gorski, Program Manager of the Michigan Department of Corrections Wellness Unit, and Kyle Kaminsk, Michigan Department of Corrections Legislative Liaison. Ms. Gorski was invited to brief the committees on the Wellness Unit. Ms. Gorski discussed the creation of the Wellness Unit, the peer support program, employee communications, the hiring of new program coordinators, new program developments and the results of the Desert Waters Correctional Outreach final report: Descriptive Study of Michigan Department of Corrections Staff Well-being: Contributing Factors, Outcomes, and Actionable Solutions. Questions followed from members of both committees. Chair McBroom and other committee members requested information unavailable at committee time. The Department of Corrections representatives will compile the information and forward it to the Chair for distribution to the committees. Being no further business before the committees, Chairman McBroom entertained a motion by Sen. Lucido to adjourn the Senate meeting. Without objection, the committee was adjourned at 3:32 p.m. The Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Justice and Public Safety adjourned at 3:33 p.m. Date Adopted by Committee: 10/15/2019.
