- HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON FAMILIES AND VETERANS REP. KATHY SCHMALTZ CHAIR COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, June 9, 2026 Noon. Room 307, House Office Building The House Committee on Families and Veterans was called to order by Chair Schmaltz. The Chair requested attendance to be called: Present: Reps. Schmaltz, Wozniak, Johnsen, Thompson, Pavlov, Woolford, Young, Byrnes, Rheingans and Xiong. Absent: Rep. Fox. Excused: Rep. Fox. Representative Johnsen moved to adopt the meeting minutes from June 02, 2026. There being no objection, the motion prevailed with unanimous consent. At 12:05 PM, the Chair laid the committee at ease. At 12:06 PM, Majority Vice Chair Wozniak called the committee back to order. Majority Vice Chair Wozniak laid HB 4905 before the committee: HB 4905 (Rep. Schmaltz) A bill to amend 1978 PA 368, entitled "Public health code," by amending section 16909 (MCL 333.16909), as amended by 1997 PA 188. Representative Schmaltz testified in support of HB 4905. Questions and discussions followed. At 12:14 PM, Majority Vice Chair Wozniak laid the committee at ease. At 12:14 PM, the Chair called the committee back to order. The following people submitted a card in support of HB 4905, but did not wish to speak: Jarrett Skorup, representing the Mackinac Center for Public Policy. Roger Smith, representing the American Association for Marriage & Family Therapy. Griff Drew, representing Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. The Chair laid HB 5724 before the committee: HB 5724 (Rep. Meerman) A bill to amend 1939 PA 288, entitled "Probate code of 1939," (MCL 710.21 to 712B.41) by adding section 18u to chapter XIIA. Representative Meerman testified in support of HB 5724. Questions and discussions followed. The following person submitted a card in opposition to HB 5724, but did not wish to speak: Chardae' Burton, representing the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services. The Chair laid HB 6020 before the committee: HB 6020 (Rep. Jaime Greene) A bill to amend 1978 PA 368, entitled "Public health code," by amending section 7212 (MCL 333.7212), as amended by 2013 PA 268, and by adding sections 2222, 2222a, and 2222b. The following person submitted a card in opposition to HB 6020, but did not wish to speak: Chardae' Burton, representing the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services. The following person submitted a card in support of HB 6020, but did not wish to speak: Derek Blumke, representing the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Representative Pavlov moved to report out HB 6020 with recommendation that the bill be referred to the Committee on Rules. The motion prevailed 6-1-3: FAVORABLE ROLL CALL Yeas: Reps. Schmaltz, Wozniak, Johnsen, Thompson, Pavlov and Woolford. Nays: Rep. Rheingans. Pass: Reps. Young, Byrnes and Xiong. Representative Thompson moved to excuse Representative Fox from the meeting. There being no objection the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. There being no further business before the committee, Chair Schmaltz adjourned the meeting at 12:26 PM.
