BOX 30036 LANSING, MICHIGAN 48909-7536 PHONE: (517) 373-2420 FAX: (517) 373-2764 **DRAFT** COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES May 28, 2020 A meeting of the Senate Committee on Education and Career Readiness was scheduled for Thursday, May 28, 2020, at 12:30 p.m., in the 403 Room of the Capitol Building. The agenda summary is as follows: 1. Testimony from Ben DeGrow, Mackinac Center. 2. Testimony regarding HB 4546 (Rep. Kahle) and HB 4547 (Rep. Frederick). 3. Adopted (S-2) substitute for SB 873. 4. Adopted (S-2) substitute for SB 875. 5. Adopted (S-1) substitute for SB 925. The Chair called the meeting to order at 12:34 p.m. She instructed the Clerk to call the roll. At that time, the following members were present: Chair Theis, Sen.(s) Horn, Bumstead, Runestad, Daley, Polehanki and Geiss, a quorum was present. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Bumstead to adopt the meeting minutes from May 20, 2020. Without objection, the minutes were adopted. The Chair invited the following individuals to present testimony: Ben DeGrow, Mackinac Center – No Position The Chair invited the following individuals to present testimony regarding HB 4546 and HB 4547: Reps. Bronna Kahle and Ben Frederick, Michigan House of Representatives – Support The Chair read the cards of those individuals not wishing to testify before the committee regarding HB 4546 and HB 4547: Paul Stankewitz, Michigan Catholic Conference – Support Jennifer Smith, Michigan Association of School Boards – Support Caroline Liethen, Michigan Department of Education – Support The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Horn to adopt the (S-2) version of SB 873. The vote was as follows: Page 1 of 2 Yeas: Chair Theis, Sen.(s) Horn, Bumstead, Runestad, Daley, Polehanki, and Geiss. Nays: None The motion prevailed and the (S-2) was adopted. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Horn to adopt the (S-2) version of SB 875. The vote was as follows: Yeas: Chair Theis, Sen.(s) Horn, Bumstead, Runestad, Daley, Polehanki, and Geiss. Nays: None The motion prevailed and the (S-2) was adopted. The Chair entertained a motion by Sen. Horn to adopt the (S-1) version of SB 925. The vote was as follows: Yeas: Chair Theis, Sen.(s) Horn, Bumstead, Runestad, Daley, Polehanki, and Geiss. Nays: None The motion prevailed and the (S-1) was adopted. There being no further business before the committee, the Chair moved to adjourn the committee.
