LAURIE POHUTSKY CHAIR COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Thursday, May 25, 2023 10:30 AM Room 327, House Office Building The House Committee on Natural Resources, Environment, Tourism and Outdoor Recreation was called to order by Chair Pohutsky. The Chair requested attendance be called: Present: Reps. Pohutsky, Hill, Shannon, Arbit, McFall, Paiz, Martin, Prestin, Schriver. Absent: None. Excused: None. Representative Arbit moved to adopt the meeting minutes from May 18, 2023. There being no objection, the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. The Chair laid SB 52 before the committee: SB 52 (Sen. Cherry) A bill to amend 1994 PA 451, entitled "Natural resources and environmental protection act," by amending section 40118 (MCL 324.40118), as amended by 2022 PA 23. Katie Olkowski, representing the Office of Senator Cherry, and Taylor Ridderbusch, representing the Department of Natural Resources, testified in support of SB 52. Questions and discussion followed. Justin Tomei, representing the Michigan United Conservation Clubs, testified in support of SB 52. The following person submitted a card in support of SB 52, but did not wish to speak: Erik Schnelle, representing the National Deer Association. The Chair laid HB 4159 before the committee: HB 4159 (Rep. Brixie) A bill to designate the black swallowtail butterfly as the official butterfly of the state of Michigan. The following people submitted a card in support of HB 4159, but did not wish to speak: Rich Bowman, representing The Nature Conservancy. Tim Minotas, representing the Sierra Club-Michigan Chapter. Representative McFall moved to report out HB 4159 with recommendation. The motion prevailed 9-0-0: FAVORABLE ROLL CALL Yeas: Reps. Pohutsky, Hill, Shannon, Arbit, McFall, Paiz, Martin, Prestin, Schriver. Nays: None. Pass: None.
