- HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION REP. MATT KOLESZAR CHAIR COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, June 6, 2023 9:00 AM Room 521, House Office Building The House Committee on Education was called to order by Chair Koleszar. The Chair requested attendance be called: Present: Reps. Koleszar, Churches, Shannon, Stone, Weiss, Glanville, Conlin, Edwards, Wegela, Greene, Markkanen, Paquette, Wendzel, Johnsen. Absent: None. Excused: None. Representatives Paquette and Wendzel joined the committee remotely. Representative Wegela moved to adopt the meeting minutes from May 23, 2023. There being no objection, the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. The Chair laid HB 4671 before the committee: HB 4671 (Rep. Koleszar) A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled "The revised school code," by amending section 1284a (MCL 380.1284a), as added by 2007 PA 101; and to repeal acts and parts of acts. At 9:02 AM, the Chair laid the committee at ease. At 9:02 AM, Majority Vice Chair Churches called the committee back to order. Representative Koleszar testified in support of HB 4671. Questions and discussion followed. At 9:05 AM, Majority Vice Chair Churches laid the committee at ease. At 9:05 AM, the Chair called the committee back to order. John McNamara, representing the Michigan Restaurant and Lodging Association, testified in opposition to HB 4671. Questions and discussion followed. Mike Latvis, representing the Wayne County Regional Educational Service Agency. Dr. Sheryl Kennedy, representing the Michigan Department of Education. The following people submitted a card in opposition to HB 4671, but did not wish to speak: Larisa Draves, representing the Michigan Association of Convention and Visitor Bureaus. Matt Sowash, representing Traverse City Tourism. Tom Nemacheck, representing the Upper Peninsula Travel Association. John Lindley, representing the Michigan Association of Recreation Vehicles and Campgrounds. Nicki Polan, representing the Michigan Boating Industries Association.
