- HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION REP. MATT KOLESZAR CHAIR COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, September 12, 2023 9:00 AM Room 521, House Office Building The House Committee on Education was called to order by Chair Koleszar. The Chair requested attendance be called: Present: Reps. Koleszar, Churches, Shannon, Weiss, Glanville, Conlin, Edwards, Wegela, Greene, Markkanen, Paquette, Wendzel, Johnsen. Absent: Rep. Stone. Excused: Rep. Stone. Representative Paquette joined the committee remotely. Representative Conlin moved to adopt the meeting minutes from June 27, 2023. There being no objection, the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. The Chair laid before the committee a series of presentation on the subject of school safety. Representatives Breen and Meerman gave a presentation on a bipartisan bill package which addresses school safety. Questions and discussion followed. Monica Merritt, superintendent of Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, and John Dignan, superintendent of Wayne-Westland Community Schools, from Wayne County Regional Educational Service Agency gave a presentation on school safety in their schools and how to improve safety measures. Questions and discussion followed. Buck Myre, President and Executive Director, and Scott Claxton, Program Director, from 42 Strong gave an overview presentation on their program. Questions and discussion followed. Bob Kefgan, Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals, gave a presentation on school safety priorities for the organization. Jill Lemond, Evolv Technology, gave a presentation on school safety. Questions and discussion followed. Lori Alhadeff and Will Fullerton, Centegix, gave a presentation on the importance of school safety. Representative Churches moved to excuse Representative Stone from the meeting. There being no objection the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. There being no further business before the committee, Chair Koleszar adjourned the meeting at 10:25 AM.
