- HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION REP. MATT KOLESZAR CHAIR COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, February 6, 2024 9:30 AM Room 521, House Office Building The House Committee on Education was called to order by Chair Koleszar. The Clerk read a letter from Speaker Tate removing Representative Stone from the committee. The Chair requested attendance be called: Present: Reps. Koleszar, Churches, Shannon, Weiss, Glanville, Conlin, Edwards, Wegela, Greene, Paquette, Wendzel, Johnsen. Absent: Rep. Markkanen. Excused: Rep. Markkanen. Representatives Paquette and Wendzel joined the committee remotely. Representative Churches moved to adopt the meeting minutes from October 31, 2023. There being no objection, the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. The Chair laid SB 518 before the committee: SB 518 (Sen. Camilleri) A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled "The revised school code," by amending section 1531i (MCL 380.1531i), as amended by 2020 PA 316. Senator Camilleri testified in support of SB 518. Questions and discussion followed. Sheryl Kennedy and Rebecca McIntyre, both representing the Michigan Department of Education, testified in support of SB 518. The following people submitted a card in support of SB 518, but did not wish to speak: Matt Schueller, representing the Michigan Association of Superintendents & Administrators. Jerry Johnson, representing the Barry, Branch, Calhoun, Jackson, Lenawee and Monroe County Intermediate School Districts. Abby Cypher, representing the Michigan Association of Administrators of Special Education. Bob Kefgen, representing the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals. Mike Latvis, representing the Wayne Regional Educational Service Agency. David Randels, representing Oakland Schools. Beth DeShone, representing the Great Lakes Education Project Education Fund. Molly Macek, representing the Mackinac Center for Public Policy. Alicia Urbain, representing the Michigan Association of Public School Academies. Dr. David Michelson, representing the Michigan Education Association. Jack Elsey, representing the Michigan Educator Workforce Initiative. Jennifer Smith, representing the Michigan Association of School Boards. Representative Johnsen moved to excuse Representative Markkanen from the meeting. There being no objection the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. There being no further business before the committee, Chair Koleszar adjourned the meeting at 9:39 AM.
