MATT KOLESZAR CHAIR COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, April 23, 2024 9:00 AM Room 521, House Office Building The House Committee on Education was called to order by Chair Koleszar. The Chair requested attendance be called: Present: Reps. Koleszar, Churches, Shannon, Weiss, Glanville, Conlin, Edwards, Wegela, Greene, Markkanen, Wendzel, Johnsen. Absent: Rep. Paquette. Excused: Rep. Paquette. Representative Wegela moved to adopt the meeting minutes from March 19, 2024. There being no objection, the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. The Chair laid HB 5231, HB 5232, HB 5233, HB 5234 and HB 5269 before the committee: HB 5231 (Rep. Weiss) A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled "The revised school code," by amending section 503 (MCL 380.503), as amended by 2023 PA 34. HB 5232 (Rep. Young) A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled "The revised school code," by amending section 553 (MCL 380.553), as amended by 2011 PA 277. HB 5233 (Rep. Steckloff) A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled "The revised school code," by amending section 1311e (MCL 380.1311e), as amended by 2009 PA 205. HB 5234 (Rep. Scott) A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled "The revised school code," by amending section 523 (MCL 380.523), as amended by 2011 PA 277. HB 5269 (Rep. Representative Brixie and Representative MacDonell testified in support of HBs 5450 and 5451. Questions and discussion followed. Ted Verner, father of Michigan State University shooting victim Alexandria Verner, testified in support of HBs 5450 and 5451. Questions and discussion followed. Dr. Christine Schloesser, a family medicine practitioner in Canton, Amy Gallagher, a counselor in the Troy School District, and Selene Koremenos-Tsebelis, a student at Huron High School, all representing Everytown for Gun Safety testified in support of HBs 5450 and 5451. Questions and discussion followed. Dr Sheryl Kennedy, representing the Michigan Department of Education, testified in support of HBs 5450 and 5451. Questions and discussion followed. Liz Morley, a mother of twin boys who were present during the Oxford shooting, testified in support of HBs 5450 and 5451. Benjamin and Susan Arthur, whose daughter Phoebe was injured during the Oxford shooting, testified in support of HBs 5450 and 5451. The following people submitted a card in support of HB 5450 and HB 5451, but did not wish to speak: Jennifer Smith, representing the Michigan Association of School Boards. Paul Stankewitz, representing the Michigan Catholic Conference. Brian Broderick, representing the Michigan Association of Non-Public Schools.
