HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON AGRICULTURE REP. REGGIE MILLER CHAIR COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Wednesday, May 15, 2024 9:00 AM Room 327, House Office Building The House Committee on Agriculture was called to order by Chair Miller. The Clerk read a letter from Speaker Joe Tate removing Representative Jennifer Conlin from the Committee, and adding Representative Peter Herzberg to the Committee. The Chair requested attendance be called: Present: Reps. Miller, Paiz, Young, Coffia, Dievendorf, Fitzgerald, Rheingans, Herzberg, Neyer, VanderWall, Roth, Bierlein, Smit. Absent: None. Excused: None. Representative Paiz moved to adopt the meeting minutes from April 24, 2024. There being no objection, the motion prevailed by unanimous consent. At 9:05 AM, the Chair laid the committee at ease. At 9:06 AM, the Chair called the committee back to order. The Chair laid SB 691 before the committee: SB 691 (Sen. Singh) A bill to amend 1965 PA 232, entitled "Agricultural commodities marketing act," by amending section 8 (MCL 290.658), as amended by 2002 PA 601. Senator Sam Singh, and Greg Bird, representing the Michigan Vegetable Council, testified in support of SB 691. Questions and discussion followed. Representative Neyer moved to report out SB 691 with recommendation. At 9:16 AM, the Chair laid the committee at ease. At 9:19 AM, the Chair called the committee back to order. The motion prevailed 13-0-0: FAVORABLE ROLL CALL Yeas: Reps. Miller, Paiz, Young, Coffia, Dievendorf, Fitzgerald, Rheingans, Herzberg, Neyer, VanderWall, Roth, Bierlein, Smit. Nays: None. Pass: None. The following people submitted a card in support of SB 691, but did not wish to speak: Mikaylah Hefferman, representing the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. Rebecca Park, representing the Michigan Farm Bureau. Jamie Clover Adams, representing the Michigan Carrot Commission. The Chair laid a presentation on the Detroit Black Community Food Sovereignty Network before the Committee. Dr. Shakira Tyler and Erin Johnson, representing the Detroit Black Community Food Sovereignty Network, gave a presentation on the Detroit Black Community Food Sovereignty Network. Questions and discussion followed. There being no further business before the committee, Chair Miller adjourned the meeting at 10:06 AM.
