- HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON GOVERNMENT OPERATIONS REP. BRIAN BEGOLE CHAIR COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES The House Committee on Government Operations was called to order by Chair BeGole. The Chair requested attendance to be called: Present: Reps. BeGole, Harris, VanderWall, Fitzgerald and McFall. Absent: None. Excused: None. Representative VanderWall moved to adopt the meeting minutes from April 17, 2025. There being no objection, the motion prevailed with unanimous consent. The Chair laid HB 4244 before the committee: Representative Maddock testified in support of HB 4244. Questions and discussions followed. Representative Fitzgerald offered the following amendments to HB 4244: 1. Amend page 1, line 3, after "Sec. 3." by striking out "If" and inserting "Except as otherwise provided in section 5, if". 2. Amend page 1, following line 4, by inserting: "Sec. 5. When communicating with non-Michiganders, especially outside of the United States, a public body may use the term "Gulf of Mexico", "Gulf of America formerly named the Gulf of Mexico", or "Gulf of America née Mexico" if usage of "Gulf of America" will or is likely to cause any of the following: (a) Confusion. (b) Reputational harm to this state, its residents, or its elected officials." and renumbering the remaining section. Representative Fitzgerald moved to adopt the amendments to HB 4244. Pavlov) A bill to prohibit counties from enacting or enforcing any law, ordinance, policy, or rule that limits peace officers or local officials, officers, or employees from communicating or cooperating with appropriate federal officials concerning the immigration status of individuals; to prescribe the powers and duties of certain state and local officials, officers, and employees; and to prescribe penalties and remedies. HB 4340 (Rep. Linting) A bill to amend 1939 PA 280, entitled "The social welfare act," (MCL 400.1 to 400.119b) by adding section 1d. HB 4341 (Rep. Thompson) A bill to amend 1966 PA 346, entitled "State housing development authority act of 1966," (MCL 125.1401 to 125.1499c) by adding section 13.
